From Totally Fired Up to… Uugh, Back to the Grind
I just got back from a powerful retreat in Costa Rica, feeling uplifted and inspired, ready to make great things happen! You know the feeling, right? You leave a seminar or workshop all motivated and confident. “Now things will be different,” you tell yourself. “I’ll stay this way when I get back to work. Big impact ahead!”
It’s a good feeling and I hope you feel it often. And the truth is, most of the time it fades quickly. Not because you’re doing anything wrong. But because if you’re like most busy executives, you don’t take time to anticipate what negative influences are likely and plan accordingly. The most effective leaders I coach expect “downers” – fires to put out, other people’s agendas, and especially their own reactive and self-sabotaging habits.
This is where the power of love in leadership, what I call Amare, really shows up. Because you love yourself, you choose to take care of yourself. You proactively identify likely downers and decide in advance how you will respond. And if you do start to spiral downward, you learn how to bring yourself back into the uplifting energy you felt, so you can effectively put all that amazing juju to work.
- When you get inspired, are you willing to enjoy and sustain your positive energy?
- How do you hold onto inspiration?
- What do you know can easily derail your positivity?
5 Amare Ways to Stay Inspired and Put it to Work
1. Record your inspired state. Make a selfie video while you are feeling the inspiration. Describe what it feels like and what brought it on – ideas a speaker shared, being part of a community, tapping into your power, seeing new possibilities, etc.
2. Identify your downers. In advance, list what predictably will pull down your energy. Start with your own trained reactions and negative habits. Then add in things other people might say and do, and demands you can anticipate.
3. Plan ahead how to handle them. For each predictable downer, write down an effective coping strategy. Consult with a trusted colleague or executive coach for help with this, as you may have some blind spots.
4. Pull yourself up. Finally, plan three simple things you can do instantly in case you lose that positive energy and inspiration. This can include what words you will say to yourself, as well as reviewing your selfie video to tap back into what originally inspired you.
5. Set yourself up for success. Every time you feel uplifted and inspired (Amare energy!), practice actively holding onto it, sustaining it, and expanding it. If some part of you tries to bring you back down, simply say “no thank you” and choose to stay uplifted.
Don’t let yourself be a seminar junkie who does nothing with all the positive energy you get. Invest in your leadership effectiveness by planning ahead and developing strategies to help you stay inspired. It will be contagious!
