High Performing Leaders: One Surprising Truth and What You Can Do About It

High Performance & Truth

You might naturally assume high performance goes hand-in-hand with total confidence. Surprise!

I coach high-performing executives. Here are three things I hear the very best say that might shock you: 1) “I don’t know if I can do it. What if I fail?” 2) “I feel like I’m never enough, no matter how much I accomplish.” 3) “If I make that decision, I’m afraid people won’t like me.”

Self-doubt and misguided fears are part of the human condition. One reason these execs are highly successful is they are willing to take these challenges on. They look in the mirror, they allow themselves to be vulnerable, and they tell the truth–even when it’s not pretty.

This is what self-aware, love-powered leaders do. It’s a powerful practice – not just because it helps them grow into exceptional leaders, but because it sets the tone for a culture rooted in honesty and safety that brings out the best in everyone. The message is “just be you.”

  • Will you look in the mirror and into your heart?

  • Will you accept all of yourself as a first step toward improvement?

3 Amare Steps to Take Toward High Performance

1. Be brave and acknowledge imperfections. Tell yourself (because it’s true!) that it takes courage and strength to see and speak to your weaknesses.

2. Look in the mirror and face the truth. Literally look at your beautiful self, smile, and ask this question: What in me is holding me back? Then, whatever it is, say thank you for saying so.

3. Imagine a different version of you. Now see yourself with that thing gone, released, and no longer part of you. Pay attention to what that feels like. Repeat often, like before every meal and at bedtime.

Take these three steps and you’ll be on the journey toward being an authentic and powerful leader who knows and loves themselves and brings out the very best in their people.
