I’m not asking about your physical location. I mean your attention. Notably, the Hebrew phrase for “pay attention” translates into placing your heart. What you most attend to is where the energy of your heart is.
Amare, the uplifting and connecting energy that is love, means being present with whatever is right now. In business, presence inspires connection and increases productivity.
- When you are working, where are you placing your heart?
- Are you aware of when you get distracted or drift away?
- How do you pull yourself back to presence?
3 Ways to Put Love to Work by Being Here Now
Attention inspires connection, which is Principle #2 of the Amare Way framework (pp. 136-140 in my book). Here are a few little things you can do today to be here now. These apply on Zoom too!
- Smile genuinely when you meet someone’s eye. A sincere smile shows where your heart is and starts an immediate human connection.
- Pay full attention to how others respond. Ask a customer or coworker how they are, regardless of their status, and really listen with your mind and heart.
- Suspend judgment. Judging coworkers, customers, or even yourself takes you out of the present moment. Instead, notice and dismiss the desire for judgement.
Attention!! Resources for Being Here Now
Mindfulness: Here’s a great primer from the Positive Psychology field on what Forbes magazine calls “the next big thing in business leadership.”
Meditating: In my view, nothing beats meditating for cultivating presence and awareness of where the energy of your heart is. Here’s a recent list of top meditation apps from O, the Oprah Magazine.
Be Here Now (the book): This 1971 classic by Ram Dass is quite the spiritual odyssey (as are his more recent books) and inspired George Harrison’s song by the same name.
