Remember who you are
“Remember who you aaare, remember who you aaare…” Reya Manna sang passionately at a festival I was at last week. I felt great impact from her lyrics, as I realized just how much of my work coaching great leaders and their teams, centers on this–supporting, reminding, and empowering them to remember and to be who they are, individually and collectively.
To be clear, who you are is not about you being the CEO or VP, or whatever your title may be. Nor is it about how old you are, what you look like, or your culture. Who you are is about your purpose on this planet, your work as a leader, and your connection to the larger whole. These core aspects of your identity can so easily be forgotten in the everyday busy-ness of business.
So through music, art, nature, writings like this–whatever pierces your defenses and awakens you, you are invited back to remember who you are. Come back into your heart, see your work through fresh eyes, and let go of beliefs and habits that no longer serve you or your team. Re-commit to being the best leader you can possibly be, and empower that commitment. Remember who you are and put the power of love to work.
- Who are you?
- What makes you forget?
- What helps you remember?
5 Amare Steps to Always Remember Who You Are
1. Find your essence. Identify 3 to 5 qualities of you that consistently show up when you are at your best. Ask people you trust for their opinions, too. Or work with an executive coach to go through a more structured and comprehensive “Find Your Essence” process. Keep a list of these qualities in front of you to remind you of who you are.
2. Lead with purpose. Right now, complete this sentence 10 times in a row: I am here to ___________. Do it again when you’re driving, showering, eating, etc. Repeat until the answer is uplifting, clear, and certain. Share it with your people. Help them get on purpose too.
3. Feed your soul. List 5 activities, large and small, that you know are really good for you at a deep level, things that always inspire you, connect you, and fill you up. Now commit to do at least one small one this week and one big one this year. Put them on your calendar. Get support for the big one from a colleague or loved one too.
4. Embrace the ABCs of love-powered leadership. Knowing that remembering who you are is key to authentic leadership, read this brief article to learn more about Authenticity, Belonging, and Collaboration as the “Amare Way” for your organization.
5. Grow your authentic leadership community. Contact three people who you respect and trust to join you on this journey of remembering who you are in order to be your best. Talk with them once a week to start, about your essence, your purpose, and feeding your soul. Then do the same for them.
As a leader, you have a powerful reason for being here and doing what you do. Invest in yourself. Give yourself the fuel, the fire, the rest, the rejuvenation you need to remember who you are, so you can be who you are. Then lead from that knowing and inspire the world!
