Lead First by Being, Then Doing and Having

As a leader, you believe in the uplifting energy of love to make business better. You want to be guided by the principles and practices of the Amare Way. You know it’s a better way to prosper, with less fear and fighting, and much more happiness.

The next thought is usually “So how do I do it?” — a very reasonable question. Yet, you’re better off starting with being before doing. Invite yourself to wonder what it’s like to be an Amare leader. Get to know yourself as that Amare leader even before taking any action. Practice being that Amare leader on the inside. This will make what you do much more authentic, practiced, and powerful, and what you have in full alignment with your being.

Now imagine you are a leader who abides by Amare ideas.

  • As an Amare leader, what do you see?
  • As an Amare leader, what do you feel?
  • As an Amare leader, what thoughts do you think?

Three Amare Ways to First Be

  1. Just be still.  Easy to say, not always easy to be. We’re taught that doing is everything. Not so. Ever wonder why we’re called human beings? Try being still for one breath. In and out. Then two, and so on. Easier with eyes closed and in nature.
  1. Observe without judging. Start by observing what’s around you. Then witness  your own thoughts. Just notice, no judgement. Then do the same with others close to you, or with something you hear or read (like this newsletter!). Observing let’s you stay longer in being. Judging often leads to premature or narrow-minded action.
  1. Laugh at yourself. Life is way too important to take yourself so seriously. You’re probably pretty funny at times. Seriously. What you think, how you make up stories, silly ideas you have, and so on. Laugh at yourself, not in a self-deprecating way, but with appreciation for being uniquely you. After all, as Oscar Wilde famously noted, everyone else is already taken!

Want to Work on Your Being?

Maybe this “being” stuff sounds woo-woo to you. That’s okay. It’s not what business schools traditionally teach. Yet more leaders are becoming conscious of how they show up and crave being real and true to themselves. My work blends business consulting, leadership coaching, and spiritual advising to support leaders being before doing and having. If that resonates with you, get in touch
