How to Receive the Good

Improve Business by Being a Good Receiver

Putting amare to work and being of service is not a one-way street. You need to receive too, accept and take in the good others see in you. Good leaders know there’s a balance between humility and dignity that is good for business and life. Denying or dismissing the positive is false humility. Thinking it’s only about you is not dignity, it’s arrogance. Demonstrating the balance shows your people a healthy way to be at work.

1.Do you receive compliments well?

2. How do you feel when others bounce back your positive feedback?

3. Is accepting positive feedback a show of weakness or strength?

3 Amare Ways to be a Better Receiver

Amare leaders know that positive feedback uplifts us all, when it’s genuine. They set a tone for respectfully giving and authentically receiving the good. Here are three ways to build your “receiving” muscles with amare

1. Observe yourself. Become aware of your immediate reaction when someone compliments you. Do you tighten up and automatically say something dismissive, or instantly return a compliment, or turn it into an attitude of superiority? When do and don’t you take it in?

2. Breathe it in. For some people it’s really hard to calmly receive compliments. When one comes your way, simply take a big breath. Then repeat the positive words to yourself. Then consider, with no self-judgement, is it true?

3. Get at the “why.” If receiving with an open heart is challenging to you, explore your underlying beliefs or fears. Complete this sentence: If I accept positive feedback and take in compliments, I might become ____________. Then ask yourself, what that’s all about? How does it serve your greatest good?

Today’s Amare Wave Wednesday Quote

“Until we can receive with an open heart,
we are never really giving with an open heart.”

—Brené Brown
