A photojournalist friend once told me his cardinal rule for getting good shots: F8 and be there. (This was in film days, F8 was the default aperture setting for unknown situations). All important was being present, showing up when it mattered, and not getting bogged down by technical details or perfection. Show up and the rest can happen.
The same holds true in leadership situations. When it’s time to be there, it’s time to be there. Identify your “default setting” for uncertainty and how to switch it on. For amare leaders, it’s authenticity and respect, always aiming to uplift and connect. Don’t worry if you’re not totally prepared or fully equipped. Show up as best you can to make the most of critical moments.
- What does “showing up” mean to you?
- How do you show up as a leader?
- What do you do to lead in unexpected situations?
Six Tips to Show Up & Lead With Big Amare
- Practice your F8. How you show up in an unknown situation – your default setting – is a skill you can master. Overtrain on purpose (like pilots prepare for emergencies) to build your “show up with amare” muscles.
- Do a mini-360. Ask people above and below you how they experience you showing up in various situations. Notice the descriptors they use – are they aligned with amare?
- Commit fully. When you show up, bring all of you. As a leader, it’s very evident when you’re all in and fully present, even when you don’t have all the answers.
- Trust the process. This may sound woo-woo – and it works. Trust that when you show up with the uplifting energy of amare, things will unfold for the highest good.
- Love uncertainty. Okay, how about tolerate uncertainty! Ultimately, the uncertain and unknown is where the richness of life lies (as yogi davidji puts it).
- Lead by example. The way you show up will set the tone for how others show up. Especially in novel, scary, or unknown situations, people look to their leaders for how to be.
