Last year I was consulting with MD Anderson Cancer Center about tools for people newly diagnosed with cancer. The fear and uncertainty can be overwhelming. Lots of people totally shut down. Yet, with the passing of time and while taking necessary action, some can step back and see things from a broader perspective that can greatly reduce stress and even bring in equanimity.
One month into sheltering at home to slow the coronavirus, I invite you to step back and see this pandemic from a broader perspective, as we collectively work toward creating a new normal.
What the coronavirus does to us
A crisis like this COVID-19 pandemic affects us in many ways, and not all are bad. You may know that the Chinese symbol for “crisis” is composed of two characters. One means danger, one means opportunity. Take stock of both these aspects, and think about how we are all affected. Here’s a starting point.
Which do you believe?
- It humbles us.
- It equalizes us.
- It unifies us.
- It connects us.
- It focuses us.
Which do you believe?
- It scares us.
- It panics us.
- It overwhelms us.
- It sickens us.
- It kills us.
Which apply to you?
- It emboldens us.
- It inspires us.
- It ignites us.
- It opens us.
- It heals us.
Like a cancer diagnosis, this virus is a huge wake-up call. Yes, it does cause sickness and death and can scare the hell out of us. It also causes unity and ultimately healing and can bring out our better angels.
