Aspiring to “Have It All”: The Promise and the Pitfalls

Rethinking “Having It All”

“Yes, you can have it all–money, power, family, love. All of it!” This is the beguiling promise of modern day business. As a leader, it is a belief that can quickly uplift you–or cause you major problems–depending on what “having it all” means to you, and how far you will go to achieve it.

For Amare love-powered leaders, having it all is not specifically about success or power or money. It is having what serves your greatest good and the greatest good of your organization. And doing whatever it takes to get there, in alignment with your principles. No more, no less. This makes “having it all” a means to an end, an intention that can support your best life and the higher purpose of your organization.

  • What does having it all mean to you?
  • Do you believe you can have it all?
  • Will you graciously accept having it all?

5 Amare Ways to “Have It All” in Your Life and Business

1. Believe you are supported. Choose to believe that life, the universe, spirit–whatever you call it–has your back and conspires to support you. Repeat it to yourself often and with conviction so it moves from a thought to a belief.

2. Adopt an abundance mindset. Believe there is plenty for you and others. Hang with people who share that belief. Prepare a mental response for when you are barraged with discordant messages that you should be afraid of life, distrust others, and hoard what you have. Believe you can have all that serves your greatest good.

3. Imagine having it all. Take ten minutes and imagine what having it all in business looks like to you. Notice what you see and hear, who is around, and what you think and feel. Lean into it. See it all, even if it feels uncomfortable.

4. Watch for self-sabotage. Learn to recognize your “set point” for success in your life. Notice if you unconsciously get in the way when things start to get better than that. If you do, intervene with self-compassion. Accept greater and greater levels of success, and having it all.

5. Be an ambassador. Meet with your team and explore what having it all means to them. Identify any negative baggage that needs clearing out. Set the tone in your organization and create the vision for realistically delivering on that possibility about having it all.

As a leader, you can make “having it all” be a powerful aspiration for your organization, when properly defined. It requires authenticity, fosters a sense of belonging, and inspires collaboration–the ABCs of The Amare Way. The trick is to aspire to have it all, without being attached to the outcomes.
