Remember the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz? You know, the one who just needed a little help to realize he actually had great courage all along? It’s a classic moment that showcases a powerful truth: We all have the courage of a lion’s roar inside us. Sometimes, though, we forget.
Finding the Lion’s Roar Within You
From a Buddhist perspective, the “Lion’s Roar” is the fearless and powerful expression of truth that comes from deep inner clarity and compassion. Just like a lion’s roar silences the jungle, a true leader’s voice—grounded in wisdom and love—cuts through noise, fear, and confusion.
In leadership, the Lion’s Roar means speaking up and acting with courage–not from ego, but from purpose and truth. It is not necessarily loud or about big, dramatic moments. It is, however, undeniable and clear.
You stand firm in your values (even if you are shaking on the inside!), inspiring others through your integrity. You lead from a place of inner stillness rather than reactivity. As a result, people listen, and they respect you.
The beauty of it is that when you step into your truth, you experience a sense of power, relief, and connection. You grow into your best self every time you make a courageous choice.
- Consider honestly, how often do you step into your courage and speak the hard truth or take bold action or own your mistakes—even when it’s uncomfortable?
- How often do you play it safe instead, and avoid exercising your courageous lion’s roar?
5 Action Steps to Roar Like a Lion in Leadership
1. Discern the truth through small decisions. Identify and make one small decision today that expresses your truth, even if it feels uncomfortable. Starting with the little things trains your mind to discern what’s right and true, even in seemingly trivial moments.
2. Express your truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. Real courage comes from expressing what you know to be necessary, even if you don’t like it or it makes you uneasy. Whether it’s giving honest feedback or setting clear expectations, speak the truth and trust that it will serve you, your team, and your business in the long run.
3. Recognize when fear holds you back. Fear is natural, so recognize it for what it is: a signal to act. Ask yourself, “What am I avoiding, and why?” Then imagine what might be possible if you were King/Queen of the forest!
4. Cultivate awareness of your leadership values. The more you understand what drives your decisions, the more clearly you can make courageous choices. Are your values driving you? Are you leading with integrity? Take time regularly to reflect on your core values and check if your actions align with them.
5. Celebrate courage, big and small. As a leader, it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate the courage of your team. Whether someone takes a stand in a difficult meeting or makes a tough call, recognize those moments. Not only does this reinforce the value of courage, but it also strengthens the team’s commitment to acting with integrity.
