Create Your Masterpiece by Being a Great Leader Everyday: Four Ways to Do It

Your Masterpiece

You’re preparing yourself for a big speech, or key business decision, or a crucial meeting. Just then, your leadership coach messages you: “Success is peace of mind from knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

This is essentially what John Wooden, one of the most revered coaches in the history of sports, routinely told his players. And it’s a perspective I offer you in your role as a current or emerging leader.

So imagine yourself, really see yourself, doing your best to be the best you are capable of being. That is a tall order indeed. And it’s the choice you can make in everything you do, every single moment, every single day. This is the path of love-powered leadership. This is the way to make each day your masterpiece, starting right now.

  • What would your day look like if you were the best you can be?
  • What does making each day a masterpiece mean to you?
  • Will you do it?

4 Amare Love-Powered Ways to Make Each Day Your Masterpiece

1. Get a little better every day. List ten tiny things you can do, very small changes, that will improve you a little bit. Add them to your schedule, one each day for the next ten days.

2. Focus only on what you can control. Draw a vertical line down the middle of a page. On one side, write What I can control. On the other side, write What I can’t control. Now take five minutes and add as many items to each side as you can. Commit to using your energy only for what you can control.

3. Start and end on a happy note. Choose three simple things you can think, say, or do to both start your day and end your day that make you happy. Keep them present by writing them on a Post-It, adding them to your calendar, making them a screensaver – whatever works for you. Then do them. Notice what happens.

4. Tell the truth to yourself. Ask yourself throughout your day: Am I doing my best to be my best? Only you really know. Don’t be judgmental or attached to the outcome. Be kind to you.

Imagine not just each day, but your life, as your masterpiece. This is the legacy you are creating, moment by moment, day by day, simply by doing your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.
