Why Flow is Good for You & Business
You’ve been in flow, in the zone; we all have. Flow is when you’re so fully absorbed in what you’re doing, that time and space seem to disappear. Flowing comes from focused presence. It’s a cool and productive state to be in.
A big barrier to being in flow is being too focused on goals. When you are, results suffer, because attachment to the outcome actually distracts you from the here and now, so you’re not all-in with the work in front of you (more in Chapter 10 of The Amare Wave).
- What helps you be “in the flow” in business?
- How often do goals or desired outcomes distract you from doing your best work?
- Have you experienced the connection between being fully absorbed in your work and the quality of the results you generate?
6 Amare Techniques for Being in Flow
1. Focus on one thing. Choose one specific task that is moderately challenging, just one, and commit to focusing solely on that one thing for some period of time.
2. Clear your space. Remove or turn off distractions and add in something that feels good to you – a candle, a tchotchke, whatever works for you.
3. Allow time. It may take 15 minutes or more for your mind to settle and focus as you get into a flow state. Be self-compassionate and allow for that time. Hang in there.
4. Experiment with ambient music. Find a song or playlist that soothes you and awakens your creativity. Put it on repeat and let the music do its magic as you move into flow.
5. Use a flow mantra. Choose a word or phrase you invoke when entering a flow state. This will help cue your brain to associate that mantra with being in a flow state.
6. Meditate regularly. Cultivate a practice that quiets your mind, which will make it easier to get into a flow state. Start with one minute a day of simply noticing your breath. Keep it simple!
