Thinking Big about Gifts this December
December is the season of gifts in many countries. It is an invitation to focus not just on material gifts, but also on acts of service, kind words, self-love, and loving others. In business, the Amare Way involves reciprocity in relationships, so that we get good at both giving and receiving.
As a leader, you set the tone for what “gifts” mean in your organization’s culture. Here are questions and tips to support you in making gifts happen with love – energy that uplifts and connects.
- What is your initial response to the idea of gifts in business?
- Do you get more joy from giving or receiving?
- Are gifts of any type a meaningful and authentic part of your company culture?
5 Amare Tips for Making Gifts Matter in Your Organization
1. Revisit your traditions. Notice how your company thinks about and handles gifts to employees, customers, etc. Brainstorm with your team ways to make gifting even more joyful and connecting.
2. Broaden the definition and timing. Consider that some people much prefer kind words, charitable donations, or acts of service to a “thing.” Ask what people in your organization like, and build those forms of gifts into your culture all year long.
3. Count your gifts. Yes, this idea has been around forever, because it uplifts us when we notice and are grateful. So do it. Take one minute now and count the gifts in your work and life. Then tell someone that number.
4. Receive with grace. Be like velcro; let the kindness of the gift really stick. Don’t bounce it back as though you are undeserving. Make it clear to your people that both giving and receiving are valued, and that gifts gain power as they are passed on.
5. Unlock your superpowers. Identify them, then tell someone what they are (be brave, you can do it!). Choose one superpower and list three ways you will put it to work this week.
