4 Steps to Get Super Clear on Your World View about Business

Why is Your Business in the World?

Creation stories remind us who we are and shape how we are in this world. In the stunning book Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer contrasts two stories that represent dramatically different world views.

One is the familiar biblical tale of Eve, banished from the Garden of Eden and subjected to a life of exile, subduing nature to survive. The other is the Anishinaabe story of SkyWoman, who dropped from heaven and created a garden for all living beings, including her descendents. One is a story of scarcity, rejection, and struggle; the other abundance, inclusion, and generosity.

  • Which creation story aligns with your world view?

These stories, like company origin stories, shape who and how we are in business too, and often unconsciously. In my book The Amare Wave, I contrast two world views about business. The better known “business is war” story is rooted in fear and distrust, promotes greed and separation, and is fueled by the energy of fighting.

In contrast, the Amare Way story is a fresh, love-centered approach that promotes connection and kindness, uplifts society, and increases prosperity. One is a paradigm of scarcity, rejection, and struggle; the other abundance, inclusion, and generosity.

  • You can choose now which story guides you in business. Which do you choose?

4 Amare Steps to Get Super Clear on Your World View about Business

1. Answer three questions. Sit with these questions: Who are you in business, why is your organization here, and how will you operate? Now write down your answers. Revisit everyday for a week. Discuss with your team.

2. Get clear on your paradigm. Really imagine you and your company operating fully in the “business is war” fighting paradigm. Notice what you think and feel. Now repeat with the Amare Way paradigm. Do as a team exercise too.

3. Add pressure. Pretend that in order to survive you are forced to choose one of the two paradigms and totally commit to it. Pay attention to how your priorities shift and which values come into play.

4. Write your SkyWoman leadership story. As an experiment, describe your leadership and company emphasizing these traits: abundance, inclusion, and generosity. If it’s far from how you are, then use your imagination!

Today’s Amare Wave Wednesday Quote

“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”

―Albert Einstein
